Saban is the best coach to be at LSU, but Miles has the best tenure actually at LSU. Easily.

Les Miles has taken what was there when he got to LSU, and exceeded the LSU brand to a national name. We recruit nationally at an elite level now. He has just as many titles as the previous coach, and just as many SEC titles. The wins are also impressive.

Saban is a freak. He is weirdly obsessed with winning in a way that is to the detriment of any other factor in his life, -if- need be. Not that he has a bad family life, but I do believe that winning and leaving a mark of greatness is beyond his other desires.
Bryant was human first and machine a -close- second. Saban is pure machine... of course, I've never met either of them.

Skip Bertman, and it's not even close.
Football has no clear choice. Debate will continue between Saban and Miles until Miles wins another crystal ball or two.

Saban wasn't here long enough
Cholly Mac is out best coach, but Miles is about to pass him

This may be blasphemy to some, but I personally feel miles and saban are neck and neck and continue to drive each other to greater heights. Don't think either would be as good without the other

As a Spurs fan who also follows Bama football, I have to say that the similarities between Nick Saban and Coach Gregg Popovich are uncanny.

In order.
Jackie Sherril
Ags were a defensive powerhouse. For awhile we were known as linebacker U. One of earlier coaches to have a black QB - Murray. Because of length of tenure, he is number 1.
Bryant
Took a horrible team, cleaned house in Junction, had Ags in position to to win NC. News leaked out that he was going to Bama and Ags lost. Had Bryant stayed at A&M another 2 or 3 years, he is probably number 1.
Tie for 3rd -
DX Bible
and
Emory Ballard - Overtook Texas finally and firmly established A&M as a SWC contender and a place where top talent wanted to play ball.

I think the answer is Shug for both. He had some mediocre years, but considering he spent a decade and a half competing against Bryant at his peak, he did pretty well, and is well-remembered for it.
The most interesting thing about this topic is the number of coaches who could legitimately claim the top spot for two different schools. Bryant and Spurrier are obvious choices, and you could make a solid case for Saban, but let's not forget King Jackie at TAMU and MSU as well.

At Ole Miss, John Howard Vaught is the perceived best coach.
The best coach was actually a three way tie....Steve Sloan, Ed Orgeron, Houston Nutt.
Nah, It's John Howard Vaught by far.
We have had some doosies at Ole Miss.....Billy Kinard, Ken Cooper, Sloan, Cutcliffe (who actually was pretty decent), Wing Nut, O, Nutt......One of my faves was Billy "dog" Brewer. But John Vaught is the man and will always be the man......
My opinion on the other school's best.....
LSU: Paul Dietzel and Cholly Mac....in that order.
Bama: Bear Bryant. Period. Saban is damn good, but there is only one Bear.
Auburn: Shug and then Dye.
UF: Spurrier.
UGA: Dooley.
South Carolina: Spurrier and Lou Holtz.
Arkansas: Broyles (who never defeated Vaught. Not one time) Lou Holtz
Tennessee: General Neyland.
Vandy: Dan McGuire (damn good one in the early part of the 20th century)
UK: Bear Bryant
TAMU: Bear Bryant and Dennis Franchione
Mizzou: Who cares?
Mississippi State: Rocky Felker and Sylvester Croom.
