I guess this is what my OP is getting at. Is this something that most other fan bases would still be upset about or is this something relatively unique to the psyche of LSU fans?

I think so. Sure, we do have a delicate psyche , but I think any fanbase would still be talking about it. But like I said, it's also storied because it was just one occurrence in a series of events that contributed to a great rivalry. As an isolated event, it may not have mattered as long as it has.

I think most fan bases would be upset that a "rival" lit cigars up and took pics on their field after a game.

Seems pretty reasonable
