Yeah that's what I was thinking with the rolypolys. I've blamed them before, only to realize later it was cutworms or snails.

I've seen it in my yard, but not in the garden yet....

Thanks for the beet recs. Will report back... Beautiful day to be in the garden. Corn and tomatoes looking good. Something ate most of the bean sprouts, but the ones that came up look good. Cucumbers germinated well (not pictured). And harvested some more carrots.

A few months ago decided to try seeding a few beets, and now they're coming in... which brings me to my next question: what the hell do I do with beets?

I baby-ed our meyer lemon for years and got maybe 3 lemons from it. Meanwhile a neighbor down the street has trees in his back yard he pretty much neglects, and he comes with bucketfulls of lemons every year. Pisses me off more than it should. Death Freeze '21 finally ended the struggle, and I'm don...

I use cardboard. It works really well to suppress weeds. A couple drawbacks are 1) that it doesn't break down as quick as I thought it would, and 2) it makes it difficult to apply fertilizer mid season.
Use only brown cardboard with plain black ink. I've read the color stuff is bad.

Spring is pretty. But also scary. Pulled some weeds, threw them in the trash, then saw this spiny baw hanging out.

Chopped leaves are a great mulch, and I use them all the time along with grass clippings. Oak leaves however have lots of tannins and take a long time to break down. I try to use them in my pathways and around the edges of the garden but not on the beds themselves. ...

I planted tomatoes in the ground today. I had direct seeded pole beans 10 days ago, but only a few are up. I think somethings eating them, so I'll start a few in soil blocks and will replace.
Planted sweet corn too. Ants in the bed tore my arse up. ...

Yeah they probably don't get much light on those days, so you could supplement them them in the evenings, but honestly I don't think it will make a difference. Once they're in the ground you c...
