During the Richt era all positions sans the offensive line unit has good to elite level talent. 1st round selections to the QB, RB, and WR positions. Not out of line to say UGA is "Tight End U" with the solid talent developed to the NFL.

The Oline has been mediocre at best. UGA is at the level of UK when it comes to talent and level of play there which is a deep mystery. Richt likes to do things his way trying to achieve an elite level opposed to doing whatever it takes. It's starting to wear thin. I think Friend is a decent coach but why not get an NFL guy in here that has coached his guys up against various pro bowl defensive linemen and linebackers week in and week out.

UGA has had several All-SEC and All-America caliber OL in recent years. IMO the talent has been fine, but obviously it's the development and/or level of play that underwhelms....

Again. Someone saying what we need to do. but it is always to say what we need to do. harder to find someone that can do it. I mean, really. If there is an OLine coach that is successful in the NFL, why would he go to a college team to coach the offensive line? He MIGHT to be offensive coordinator..but why go down a level in coaching for a similar position? because he is tired of making NFL money?

However, he has a point. The OLine hasn't been as good as past teams. Hopefully Friend will get it turned around. It will take more than one year. I think last years OLine was improved...and I think before the year is out this years will be considered good.

Because we won't spend that kind of dime on one.

I'm not going to try to overhype our OL from 2001-present, because they have been very underwhelming. But we have had some great ones (units) and some great individuals during that time. For whatever reason they seem to be few and far between, but it's not like we haven't EVER been good since Richt has been here.

This is a stupid article and a stupid post.

Georgia scored 35 points. That should have been enough to win the game.

They have the best offensive line in the SEC. They sagged during the middle of the game due to crowd noise.

You can not name a team in the SEC that has a better OL than Georgia. Did you see how bad Bama's OL performed against Virginia Tech?

I agree with the article. Our recruiting in general has disappointed, but particularly on the OL.

Want to know where our stud Georgia-bred OL are? They're at other schools. Vadal Alexander will be a 4 year starter at OT at LSU (if he doesn't leave early to the NFL), David Beasley is a starting guard at Clemson, Max Garcia is a starting guard at UF, Cameron Erving is a starting tackle at FSU, Tre Jackson is a starting guard at FSU, Ja'Wuan James is a starting tackle at UT, Austin Shepherd is a starting tackle at Bama, Evan Swindall is a starting center at Ole Miss.

That's not to say we haven't signed some guys from GA who are quality, but we've too often chased guys like Avery Young and Laremy Tunsil only to be left hanging, all the while players like the above have left our backyard and gone on to start at other local schools. Not just fill the depth chart, but start. And that doesn't even go back to some of the monumental misses like James Carpenter and Chance Warmack who both went to Bama and were drafted in the 1st round in recent years.

I understand that evaluating OL is difficult, but it's also our coaches job. I also understand recruiting is difficult, but that's also our coaches job.

I think most here would probably rather have Austin Shepherd, Vadal Alexander, Ja'Wuan James, or Cameron Erving starting at tackle over Gates. That's 4 OT's from in-state that we let get away, that are all better than the one we got.

The fact that we can't sign everybody is why it's so important that we make sure the folks we do sign are the right guys.

Our O line has sucked since Charlie Williams Lodge shut down. there ain't no where in Athens to properly feed an offensive lineman anymore.

If we lined up in the "I" 85% of the time, and ran downhill at Clemson with that 265lb freak fullback leading the way we would've battered them.

Instead 70% of our run plays were finesse, shotgun, slow developing plays and our guys couldn't hold the edge against Clemson's undersized speed. We played right into their only defensive strength. I still can't believe that was our gameplan.

Good article. Can't deny it. For experienced as our line is they looked very confused with those blitz.
