A conference championship provision only serves to give the appearance of objectivity; however, it's flawed. Not all conferences are equal. The SEC is the best and deepest. Every other conference only has 2 or 3 great programs while the SEC has 4 minimum.

I might go a step further
ACC was football suck and has added good teams but killed them. Florida State (.5) + ACC#2 (.25) + ACC #3 (.25) = 1
B1G was Ohio State (1) + Michigan (1) = 2
B1G is basically Ohio State (1) + Michigan (.5) + B1G#3 3rd team in given year (.5) = 2
B12 was Oklahoma (1) + Nebraska (1) + Texas (.5) + B12#4 (.5) = 3
B12 is Oklahoma (1) + Texas (.5) + 3rd team in given year (.5) = 2
PAC was Southern Cal (1) + PAC #2 (.5) = 1.5
SEC was Alabama (1) + Tennessee (1) + Georgia (.5) + LSU (.5) + Florida (.5) + Auburn (.5) = 4
SEC is Alabama (2) + Tennessee (0) + Georgia (.5) + LSU (.5) + Florida (.5) + Auburn (.5) + South Carolina (.5) + TAMU (.5) = 5
