For eats in Gruene, I prefer Mozie's over Gristmill (too many horrible experiences at Gristmill). Same owner, better atmosphere and better food.
If you are into BBQ, one of the Texas Top 50 from Texas Monthly is just up the road right south of San Marcos. Take Hunter Road/1102 up about 10 miles and it will be on your right. Damn good BBQ, love the cheddar jalapeno sausage. Sides suck, don't bother.
