From Jay Hughes, Alderman, Ward 1: Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow, August 20, 2013, the Board of Alderman will vote on whether to allow refrigerated beer to be sold in the grocery stores and convenience stores. The meeting begins at 6:00 pm, on the second floor of City Hall. Two issues related to this will also be debated/decided: 1. Issue 1: Whether the law should go into effect as usual - that is thirty days after passage. Or, whether to delay its enactment for a period of months. My opinion is that there is no just reason to delay enactment of a law if it passes. The sooner the retail stores can benefit from sales, the better to help offset any costs. A delay beyond the football season, particularly the straight run of home games in October, is simply not logical and can only harm the small businesses. 2. Issue Two: Whether cold beer should be available for sale in grocery and convenience stores on Sundays. If cold beer is legal, the day of the week should not matter. It is unfair for one group of Oxford merchants to be prohibited from selling their product for an arbitrary reason. It is also a matter of individual rights of adults purchasing a legal product. Please contact your alderman and may and let them know how you feel. It is time to put this archaic issue behind us and get on with managing the important issues that effect our daily lives in Oxford, as well as its future. Thanks and I hope to see you tomorrow night. Jay Hughes Alderman, Ward 1
Do y'all think this will pass or will it be shot down?

Yea i was thinking that myself. Some other guy on the rivals site said that Buffalo Wild Wings built under the premise that beer would be sold on Sunday since that's their biggest day. That mite be bullshite but take it for what it's worth.

Going to pass. No reason it shouldn't be and it seems like everyone on the Board of Alderman is for it.

Negative. But they're voting on Sunday alcohol sales here within the next few meetings.

I grew up in Oxford. Every time I go home I walk into the gas station and I kid you not spend 5 minutes cyphering through the cold drinks looking for the beer only to find cases of it sitting on the floor hot as shite!

Not a coincidence that this comes on the heels of New Albany selling cold beer 7 days a week for the last few years... It just doesn't make sense to only sell hot beer 6 days a week... The urban legend behind the whole thing is that the mayor of Oxford used to also own the ice house there... Doubt there's any truth to that.
