Not as much as you might suspect.

In 1892, two historic events occurred: women were first admitted to the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, and football was first played as a school sport. Eventually, football replaced polo as the main sport on campus. In 1899, the school name was again changed, this time to Alabama Polytechnic Institute.

I've referred to Auburn as "Alabama Polytech" a time or two.

I've got an Auburn practice football that Coach Vince Dooley (an Auburn asst.coach) gave me about 55 years ago. It has "API" stamped on the side of it.
Also, few people know that when Auburn dropped polo to pickup football, it was the last time that the game was played at the college level using cows.
