Favorite unsung heros of past teams?

I'm going to go fairly recent with my pick (I'll let scrooster and some of the older folks go further back), WR Tori Gurley.
I frickin loved this dude (no homo), he always competed and ALWAYS had a great smile on. I read an article on him a while back that claimed he never dropped a pass at USC.
He only had 900 recieving yards and 6 TDs during his two years as a Gamecock, and was overshadowed (and rightfully so) by Alshon in 2010, but he was absolutely better than what the stats show and I loved watching him play. It always frustrated me and I always wondered why we didn't try to get the ball to him more. Hope he can get some significant PT and make a name for himself in the NFL this year, I'll be rooting for him.

I've never seen another player have as many TD passes called back as Tori.

I think your hindsight might be a little less than 20/20 there. Gurley was not that great outside of his last year. For the first couple of seasons he seamed to stone hand a lot of passes. He was DL Moore until his last season when something clicked and he became clutch. He was definitely a hero that last season, though I don't know if he was unsung that much.
What do you mean by unsung, by the way? Overlooked by Carolina fans, or those outside the Garnet Bubble?

Before you think I have gone and lost my mind think of the sequence of events :
1) 81 Clepmson team was no offensive power against top teams
2) Without the Fridge the taterheads do not win the 81 MNC
3) Not winning the 81 MNC means less attitude and more humility
4) Not winning the 81 MNC means less optimism for a second MNC
5) Not winning the 81 MNC means Clempson accepts invite to join SEC instead of rejecting it
6) Rejection by Clempson means Cocks get the invite instead
7) In the ACC Clempson slips while in the SEC the Cocks move up
No Fridge and it could have been South Carolina in the ACC with some mid level coach instead of the OBC and a team knocking on the door of a MNC. Fridge, wherever you are I toast you for allowing the taters to go full metal tater.

Gurley won the starting job at the WR position that he and Jeffery competed for in 2009, when it was essentially Tori's first year of active duty. He was always a matchup problem for defenses, as he had a TE's body and height, but decent speed and hands of a WR.
Tori's issue was he was not as adept at positioning his body between defenders and incoming passes as Alshon was: he would often let smaller DBs "work" him and dictate positioning, which often had Tori out of position for passes that should have been his.
Both Tori and Alshon being young and inexperienced in 2009, they both only knew how to play the one WR position they competed for, so when Alshon beat out Tori at the spot, it often meant Tori was relegated the 2nd half of 2009 as a sideline spectator.
In 2010, Tori learned a 2nd receiver spot well enough that we were able to field both at the same time for passing plays, and it made our passing game much more effective: it would've been sick had TE Wesley Saunders not screwed the pooch (sorry, UGA) and rendered himself ineligible for the season.
Having Jeffery, Gurley, Saunders, and Barnes and Moore as backup receivers to go along with Lattimore and a mostly effective Garcia in 2010 could have made the possibilities in 2010 much more positive than they were....

Ryan Brewer. That young man personally skull fricked OSU in the outback bowl. His whole career he was overlooked by many opposing teams and when they did, he stuck it in deep.

Took mine. Pat Dimarco was a major unsung hero for us for a few years. One of my favorite Gamecocks.

Since Gurley, Boyd, and Dimarco are already taken, I'm going to have to say Darian Stewart. Seemed like he was always in the right place at the right time.

Rashad Faison
Eddie Leopard
Tony Penny
What was the name of the kid who Smokey tried to bite? White running back, I think his last name may have started with an M. Todd Moritz maybe? Kid was hardcore.
Johnny Wright
Carl West is another one - I think he wore one number more than George Rogers. West was a helluva Fb though, perhaps the best we've ever had.

Last year Smokey went after Ellington, the pic is about 4/5 down the page on the link.

The guy you're thinking about actually getting bit was Scott Mortiz under Fat Brad's team.

Boomer Foster and David Turnipseed from the early 1990's.
Also, Chris White was a pretty good center for a few years for us.
Definitely agree with Darian Stewart, and another guy that stands out was Ken Harney.
