I do love how when the religious right started to become more politically aware and active in the 80s all of the sudden this was a dire threat to the Republic in the media. Hell, if you listened to the NY Times or CNN a Baptist with a Bible is more of a threat to America than a terrorist with a car bomb. But you never heard a peep from the media when the left-wing religious groups sounded off on an issue.

I agree and disagree. The media's outright refusal to demonize left wing radicals is extremely annoying. That's an entirely different issue that deserves its own discussion. For the purposes of this thread though, the Religious Right does a disservice to the Christian Church imho. It's an unnecessary distraction from the Church's true mission.

Abortion, same sex marriage, homosexuality, greed, adultery, etc and other acts are merely symptoms of a disease that all human beings share. The disease is our sinful nature and it's what ALL people are born with regardless of how "good" they appear or act. From this perspective I think the Religious Right would be better served in not pushing a political agenda but getting back to basics and making sure the Church itself is following the correct doctrines. Instead of singling out gays, prostitutes, etc as sinners, the emphasis should be that ALL OF US are sinners and need God's saving grace. The Religious Right seems to lament the fact that there is sin in a sinful world and they can somehow eliminate it through law and politics. That's like lamenting the fact that gambling happens in a casino or that drinking occurs in bars. Sin is inevitable and as long as this world lasts no amount of action by the Church is ever going to totally eliminate it.

I apologize for sounding preachy because heaven knows I have tons of my own issues and struggles but whether I like it or not the truth is the truth. No sense in deluding one's self.
