What should I expect from their park experience? I root for the Cards, but my father and brother in law wanted to take my wife and I to a game so I couldn't refuse

Plan on stretching your legs out over the empty seats in front of you, and expect a royals loss. Maybe bring a Fire Ned sign.
But really... it's a beautiful place, especially since the renovation. Should be a good day at the ball park.

Damn straight you root for the Cardinals!!
Seriously, the Royals have a really pretty ballpark. It's a shame it's usually fairly empty. You'll have a nice time. But a better one when you catch a game in St. Louis.

It's a really nice stadium.
If you're sitting on the first base side, it can get really hot if the sun is not down, so I try to sit on the third base side at the start if possible

Difference between Royals and Cards games IMO:
Cards: you go to actually watch the game and support a highly competitive team in a more classic baseball atmosphere.
Royals: you go for the more laid back "party" atmosphere, the tailgating, and to socialize with others. It's not as much about the game itself as it is the experience as a whole. If you stay in your seat for more than 75% of the game, you're doing it wrong.
Check out the HOF in left field, get some KC barbecue in the right field plaza, stand in the outfield viewing decks in front of the fountains, etc. Be sure to see it all!
Also as SVB said, first base side will get lots of sun and heat. I prefer 3rd base for this reason.

I love their ballpark. Will be a good time no matter what. Enjoy!

Kinda glad it's a more laid back atmosphere since I'm not a fan of either team playing (think it's oakland next week). Also think it'll be an evening game so hopefully it won't be too hot.
Thanks for the advice y'all! Will let you know how it goes

Very nice ballpark. Nice, comfortable, relaxing. Love the new outfield area, party deck, etc. Stand down by the waterfalls if it gets hot out there. Check out the hall of fame museum, Royals do have a great history.
