While the NCAA's website states that "the NCAA does not conduct a national championship in Division I-A football and is not involved in the selection process," it goes on to say that "a number of polling organizations provide a final ranking of Division I-A football teams at the end of each season." Ole Miss claims three national championships based on other polls.

I'm confused.

We were talking about NCAA recognized champions. Their site clearly states we have one. They weren't in the selection process at the time and still don't appoint who champions are in football today. That being said, on their site, they recognize us as champions. Same deal as the 2004 national title with LSU and USC.

easy, since the NCAA is not in charge of deciding the champion (bowls, polls and robot computers are) and there's no tournament (an NCAA requirement), the NCAA cannot award a champion to elite level football. An outside source must do so, basketball used to work on a similar system before the NIT or NCAA tourney.

College Football National Championship Trophies awarded

NCAA Titles Awarded

This first picture are the trophies awarded to the CFB National Champion by various organizations (BCS,Coaches,AP)

The 2nd picture is an NCAA Championship awarded by the NCAA to its champion.

You will never see an FBS school's football team awarded a trophy that looks like the 2nd pic, b/c the NCAA doesn't award them. They do, however, recognize the football champions of the FBS that are awarded by certain polls.
