It was obvious Holder didn't have command of the curve and was leaving it high yet the kept going to it. It almost cost y'all big.
Congrats on the big win I would have bet my life savings that ball was gone when it left the bat. Pucker factor in starkvegas had to be huge.

I was just on the phone with my friend that is there. His son is a manager with State. CT Bradford came in his room as we were talking about that hit. I asked Chad if he thought it was gone. He said he did and even C.T. did. Thank God it wasn't.

I believe our catcher, whether it be Ammo or Slauter, calls the game.

No way I give that lefty a slow curve he could pull.

Yea, since that's exactly how we drew it up.

He made a mistake. His curveball was sharp the entire inning. It was the right call. The fastball down the dick before was an awful pitch call.

He threw 2 good curves the entire time he was in. One on the strikeout and the one the dude bunted foul. Everything else was up in the zone.

Our catchers call all pitches

Catcher should always call pitches. If he can't you have the wrong guy back there. The closer did fine and has to throw the pitch he is comfortable with in the situation. He has the best perspective on holes in swings for sure. Spotting the pitch is all about confidence and arm feel on a given day. Bottom line is he closed the deal. Your turn.

Pretty sure they said he is one of the best closers in college ball. You probably shouldn't worry about him.

So you want a 20 year old catcher calling the pitch to win the national title? Skip Bertman said it like this, "I have all of the charts in front of me, I have scouted all of the hitters, I have coached 1000s of games...I'm not going to trust a college catcher behind the plate who spent the previous night spanking it to porn from the hotel pay per view."

Love Skip but I disagree. Catcher is the coach on the field, plus he has the best view of ball movement and holes in a swing.

Holder was hanging his curve. New bats and his fastball saved him in that outing.

quote:You left out wind. Holder's fastball works when he is locating his wicked curve. He didn't get his curve yesterday and almost pooped in his nest trying to find it. If his curve is working, he is pretty much shut down. Runners on base seem to bother him lately - not good for a closer.

Holder's breaker hasn't been nearly as sharp the past two weeks, that's for sure...
And yes, both catchers call games for us. They didn't initially -- but since they are both seniors that have proven trustworthy handling our staff, we let them call it 95% of the time.
I think we've also seen a new trend with these good teams also sitting dead red on the breaker, which is an approach we hadn't seen this season against him...
