Flying to a different country and never leaving the airport - count as a visit?

Hypothetical - if I fly to Thailand and get on a different plane in Tokyo, but never leave the airport...does that count as a visit? Can I say that I've been to Japan in a conversation with someone? The same thing goes for US states.
I say yes, a friend says no.

Nope.
Even just driving through a state is debatable. You at least have to specify, "I only drove through it."

I say yes, but you need to clarify the stop.

No. Driving through doesnt count either.

If you have driven through most of the state then you have definitely been there.
I drove through Louisiana and stopped in New Orleans for 3 hours. I have definitely been there.

Driving through and stopping for 3 hours isn't the same. I'd count that as a visit. But just literally driving through and stopping for food, gas, etc is not considered a visit IMO

what else is there to do though? you accomplished everything worth seeing in that state.

As bad as Kansas is, this statement is false.

If you don't get a stamp from customs... no visit occurred. That's my view.

On the drive-through the state only issue, I think it is safe to say you've "been to ____"
That counts toward your total number of "been to" states, but it is a little disingenuous to say you've "visited" in that scenario IMO.

No. I've changed planes at Heathrow and Charles de Gaulle but would never say that I visited London and Paris.

if your passport gets stamped then yes, if not then no. Pretty cut and dried.

Stopping for 3 hours changes things.

Technically you're in Japan, but Narita IAP is a good hour and change from Tokyo. I say no.
