I've always thought that expansion can reach a point where it's counter productive. The point of expansion is to get more money. More money leads to better resources which will ultimately lead to wins. However, if expansion means making your schedule tougher, then is there really a huge benefit?

For the big schools its one thing, but for the middle to lower tier schools (MSU, OM, etc,) I don't see the benefit. Their road to a championship just got tougher.

I don't really think a combo selected from UNC/NC St and VPI/UVA would really crush the chances of mid tier teams.

The point of expansion is to survive, be one of the last conferences standing. For schools in the scramble it's musical chair, don't be left without a chair.

That said, 10 was perfect but 12 got us a championship game and that has been a great thing - has not hendered our ability to win championships with a plus one game like many thought.
