I dont really follow the abortion debates and all too much, but it is an interesting comparison. How far along do you have to be before you can no longer have an abortion?

Different states have different laws regarding this. Some states allow it in to the 3rd trimester. If you have a minute read this article about Kermit Gosnell. He is an abortion doctor on trial in Pennsylvania for murder and other charges related to practices in his office.

Dumb thread is dumb

I know you want to think these are similar issues, but they really aren't.

Smoking and drinking while pregnant leads to lots of problems for the baby after birth. = Bad in everyone's eyes, needlessly impacting babies for the rest of their lives.

The argument for abortion isn't about people hating babies, or wanting them to have a horrible life. It is primarily about whether some situations are right to raise a child in. A 14 year old can't give a baby the same life as a well established family on most occasions. Thus the question of whether abortion is an option for that mother. (Just one of many similar scenario's we could have plugged into this.)

Disclaimer: I don't sit on either side of the Abortion debate, but I am able to see both sides and their arguments.

Point taken but there are also people out there that would love to have a child but are unable to so their only option is to adopt. The waiting lists are so long to adopt an American child that other countries have made a business out of adopting kids to American families.

I understand aborting for medical reasons and in the case of a woman getting pregnant by a rapist but pregnancy from consensual sex when there is no threat to the mother's life should not end in abortion. There are too many other options.

I find it funny that I make a few threads without intentions of rustling jimmies and most everyone gets their jimmies rustled anyways.

You really don't rustle anyone's jimmies. You have an over inflated sense of importance.

Nah, no one has said anything about anyone's sense of importance. I don't know why you'd even bring that up. Looks like you got your jimmies rustled a bit.

A friend of mines girlfriend smoke while she was pregnant. Baby weighed 1 pound 2 ounces at birth. She amazingly survived and is a happy kid but she's going to be in the slow classes when she starts school. She's over two and can't speak yet

The worst part about that is that it was preventable.

How are you so positive it was preventable? I'm by no means supporting the girl and her decision to smoke, but how do you know for certain that the child wouldn't have been born the same way had she not smoked? Is there scientific proof linking her smoking during pregnancy to the child's condition in their specific situation? Or are you just finger pointing and blaming her based on a belief/perception based on odds?

I'm just curious how you came to your apparently confident position that her child's condition was preventable. What if it was not? Miscarriages occur and unhealthy children are born all the time from mothers that don't drink, smoke, or do drugs during or before pregnancy. We'll never know for sure either way.

But to answer your original question, I think it's trashy/stupid/disrespectful..... the list could go on.

My response was based on the assumption that the child's poor health condition was caused by the smoking. But yes it has been proven that smoking and/or drinking during pregnancy causes low birth weight among other things.
