re: First trip to Dallas...must do's and must eats

If you get the chance to venture in towards uptown Friday afternoon, I would suggest hitting the Katy Trail Icehouse (if the weather is nice out) around 4ish. Lots of talent there, sweet place/atmosphere.

I mean growing up in a suburb, and having friends that live around there, it is always fun for me. I can walk in to almsot any bar in and around there, and I see someone I knew at A&M or in high school. That being said, I grew up in north Dallas/Plano, and I find Addison to be much more enjoyable. Way less crowded, drinks are more reasonable, and the crowd is less yuppie. It is whatever. Dallas is a fun city, you just gotta find your niche.

When I lived in Dallas, I lived in Dallas. I grew tired of the McKinney Ave crowd quickly.

I preferred to drink my time away in Lakewood or Greenville Ave. Adairs was the only reason I went to Deep Ellum. It got pretty hood there for a while.

Breadwinners is the truth. I also spent quite a lot of time at Snyder Plaza. Nash/Najera/Nowitzki owned a bar there called X(ten). I karaoked a few times... Some good food there, too.

Angry Dog was the second reason I went to Deep Ellum. In fact, most trips to Adairs were preceded by a trip to Angry Dog.

I drank quite a bit at the Cock & Bull and Lakewood bar in Lakewood.

San Francisco Rose was my place on Greenville Ave, as it was the closest walk from my house.

I lived downtown a bit, too. Spent time at the bars at all the hotels. There's a lot more there now, though.

I also did West Village some. There was a russian bar there called Nikita. Used to eat at Taco Diner and Celebrity Cafe, and Mi Cocina. I job hunted using wifi at the W. Village Starbucks for two weeks straight.

Went to Stoneleigh Pea some, too.

Damn, I'm missing Dallas after all these posts.

Jake's is good too. I made out with a waitress that works there once. She was sort of cute when I was wasted. No idea if she would have held up in the dark.

I never really cared for Snuffer's, although the only one I really ever went to was the one attached to The Grenada. I was usually drunk every time I went there. There was a drug-related gun murder there one afternoon when I lived right down the street.

I disagree about Dallas not having any good food. There are more restaurants there per capita than most cities according to some vague statistic I recall being told once.

I loved Gloria's (El Salvadorean), MiCocina, Uncle Julios, all the local DFW chain places like that. There's so much good Tex-Mex there that it will make you cry.

Being that its in kind of a nature-wasteland, all there really is to do for recreation in DFW is eat, drink, and shop. Dallas does very well in all of those categories. I've forgotten more great restaurants in Dallas than I can remember.

It doesn't have a big cluster of unique real fine dining establishments within a few square blocks like some cities, but there's a lot of good food in Dallas.
