Visiting College Station - Places to eat/Things to do

Hey, I'm going to the LSU/A&M basketball game on the 6th, so I wanted to see if there are recommendations from aggies on places to eat, or things to do to pass time before the game. (for reference, the AU board has nice thread with some of this info. LINK)

Depends on how much time you have and what interests you. The Dixie Chicken and the Northgate area is the most famous bar scene. Lots of different bars and restaurants to check out there. Some other cool places to eat outside of Northgate are Laynes for Chicken Fingers, Doubledaves for pizza, Wings and More for Wings, J Codys for a great casual steak restaurant, or Koppe Bridge for burgers, or Christophers for fine dining.
On campus there is a lot to do depending on what interests you. The Bush Library is a really cool museum but something you need a couple hours to do. The Memorial Student Center gives you a good feel for A&M student life and has the "Hall of Honor" with the 7 A&M Medals of Honor. The Bonfire Memorial is really interesting and powerful, esp some of the letters from the victims there and it gives you an idea of just how big it was. There is a baseball game on the 5th but I'm guessing you won't be in town that early and looking at the Athletics website I don't see any other games on. I think the football team is practicing that day but practices are closed so you really can't see much, though you can walk by and see some of the new facilities they are building if you are interested (the weight room is pretty cool and open so you can see it even from the outside very well). The Corps of Cadets museum houses a really nice gun collection if that is your thing as well as a lot of cool wartime memorabilia.

Thanks for the very detailed reply. If time allows it, I'm going to try and spend some time around campus. Will definitely check The Dixie Chicken, looked like a good pick after doing some searching around.

The Dry Bean is just a shot bar. It's right by the Dixie Chicken. The Chicken is beer only, no liquor.

you can get some beers at Dry Bean though.
that plus the liquor is why I prefer it over DC.
plus, even with how narrow it is inside I generally have an easier time getting a drink.
maybe I've just always run into the wrong bartenders at the DC.

The Cadet Center actually houses 6 of the 7 A&M Medals of Honor. The ones in the MSC are fakes but they do have a really nice display. The 7th Medal has not been donated to the University currently.

Also forgot to ask this, but what do you need to know about parking? At LSU, it's super lax and you don't really have to worry much about where you park, but I know that isn't the case at every university.

Depends on what you're doing. You can park on ng and walk a short distance to campus if that is what you want to do. I live in apartment on ng and don't pay for my units parking, I just park close by. Granted I graduated, so my car isn't arriving at night time when the bars a busy, at that point it is a madhousse.

There is paid parking on campus in several of the garages and lots. Also don't park in lots that require permits because they will ticket you. All in all I wouldn't recommend parking on campus since the rates are kind of high for visitor parking and the parking attendants love giving out tickets.
Just go by Telefawx's advice and try to find a place on northgate to park.

For basketball? ? Won't there be cash parking around Reed Arena?

As long as it isn't a very long walk, I don't mind parking around campus and not at the arena.
Also don't think it'll be too crowded as its a Wednesday night.

You're right there is cash parking for $10.
It's only about a mile from northgate to reed arena. You should be perfectly fine getting a spot at northgate since it is a wednesday.
