Weak non-conference scheduling in baseball and basketball?

Why would you do this to yourselves? It doesn't benefit you in any way other than to get wins that you won't get credit for if you are on the "bubble" or put you past teams that are ranked close to you.
Miss State and Stansbury did this every year. Bama a few years ago used to do this and got snubbed and has somewhat learned it's lesson. Donovan and Florida did this a few years ago when he had a young team.
In baseball, I was perusing UK's baseball schedule and I think they play 1 good non-conference team in Coastal Carolina (who isn't as good this year) and then at Louisville later in the year. That's it.
Miss State appears to be playing 19 straight home games to open the season against Portland, Grambling, Purdue, Samford, Rhode Island, St. Joes, MVSU, Central Arkansas and 1 game vs. USM. That's absurd.

Purdue hosted a Regional last year
Samford won 40 games and led the nation in HRs last year.
Southern Miss is ALWAYS solid in baseball
Rhode Island was 33-25 last year far from terrible and their coach was A-10 coach of the year.
Central Arkansas is currently 8-1
How's Tennessee doing in baseball so far???

LSU baseball 2011 and Cal State Fullerton say hi.
There is no reason to beat your team up because even if you beat good teams it doesn't help.

I'm just messing with you. I'm not sure why we are doing it to the extent we are this year. Every year there's a bunch of games you scratch your head about but this year I think we're playing a record number of home games. There are some quality teams in there though, as stated above. I understand all the "That was last year" talk, but when you make a schedule thats really all you have to go on.

College Baseball is like the late Al Davis used to say "Just win Baby!"
You play 60 games, just win as many as possible and the committee will notice.

1 game vs. USM. Purdue has like 4 seniors on their team this year. Central Ark wins are vs. Murray State, Jackson State and MVSU.

You don't have to stack up wins in baseball really.
just be over .500 and getting to the sect is an automatic ncaa bid 95% of the time

They'll notice you've played nobody.

There's a fine line when scheduling non-conference. Corbin likes a tougher non-conference schedule. Last year a very young Vandy team opened the year at Stanford and got smoked. It took them half a season to recover. This year Vandy has the 4th highest SOS and still has a road trip to Oregon next weekend.

So under your assumption Rhode Island is terrible because they are 0-8 even though their losses are to 3 top 10 teams in Fla State, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State.
Also Samford is the preseason pick to win the Southern Conference. Portland just played Oregon a 3-1 game Grambling State took 2 of 3 from Georgia State.
You act as if Mississippi State is playing the school for the blind.

Coach Cal has certainly softened the schedule since he arrived in Lexington. Rupp and Tubby were probably the toughest schedules as UK's HC.

But you learn more about your team and what needs attention and you have the rest of the season to try and fix it instead of getting into conference play and trying to figure something out you could have started on in previous weeks.
