He was playing behind Lawrece Roberts, Marcus Campbell and splitting time with Walter Sharpe

So because of this, you don't think we should recruit kids from inner city Jackson, Memphis, Birmingham, Montgomery, etc...?
We may not have a high basketball IQ but there are extremely athletic kids in SEC states, its more of getting them to buy in to a system and hard work than it is them improving fundamentals (because they usually come along quickly due to these kids being so athletic)
Best basketball team IQ we ever had was the 2003-2004 team with 2 Mississippi kids in the starting lineup with Bowers and Harper. Power, Vincent, and Roberts also had great Basketball IQ's.
Hard to attract kids like Shane to the SEC anymore when they can play Big-10 ball unless its Florida.

Harper was not on the 2003-2004 team
It's not accident that 2 of our best teams in school history were mostly out of state guys. We've had much more success with players from Alabama and Georgia

That's right he had a torn ACL. Winsome Frazier was the other starter and by FAR had the worst IQ on that team.

Yep Rhodes was a screwup for his first 2 years and came close to quitting on multiple occassions. That was a bigger problem to him than who he was playing behind.

Its not like AAU is new, and its definately not going anywhere unless the NCAA makes a major move.

They need to. It's corrupting College basketball so badly it's not even funny. They are undermining basketball as we know it. Players get to college lacking so many fundamentals that were expected of players 15-20 years ago. Boxing out is basically non-existent nowadays, but it is an integral part of basketball. Same for the shot fake and jump stop. They have become non-existent because players don't learn fundamentals.

It's a lot more shite than that though.

Go watch some Big-10 Basketball games when you get a chance like I have this year. I GUARENTEE you that Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, and Ohio State players ALL are as fundamentally sound as it gets.

Not as sound as it gets, but definitely more so than SEC schools.

They are fundamental yes, but not the fundamentals of 20, 30, 40 years ago. The talent level has increased through the years, but the basketball IQ is slowly decreasing.

Oh I agree. It's alot of things piled into one. I believe it starts with AAU though.

Half of college players don't even know how to properly guard someone 1 on 1.

I once coached at a HS in MS, and I was walking through the gym and saw the coach conducting practice.
They were scrimmaging each other and one player stole the ball, broke away and bounced the ball off the back glass for an oop to the teammate behind him. The ball was way off line and he missed the dunk miserably.
The coach begins screaming and yelling at the players. I thought he was going to be pissed for doing something so foolish and you usually only see attempted in a NBA all star game. Instead he brought them down to one in and they practiced the off the back glass alley oop for the remainder of practice so they could learn the proper technique.
Coaching in MS is a joke, in all sports. Baseball probably gets the best coaching and even that is not where it should be. Basketball is definitely the worst though.

Very true. Partially that could be blamed on refs calling touch fouls.
