Started in Mississippi. At least Catfish farming did... started up around the early 60's.
Grew to a huge industry in the late 90s. Every farmer was making an absolute killing (some multi millions a year). Then the economy started going to shite in 05 and now the industry only has about half the acreage it had at its peak in 2003, due to high fuel/feed prices and fewer sales due to economy, along with tougher foreign competition from cheaper, less safe imported catfish and tilapia out of Vietnam and China.
