Page 168 of the book "The University of Mississippi: A Sesquicentennial History".
Excerpt: "The term "Ole Miss" was a title domestic slaves in the Old South used to distinguish the mistress of the plantation house from the young misses of the family."
Page 144 of "Ever is a long time: a journey into Mississippi's dark past, a memoir".
Excerpt: "Even the name Ole Miss has it roots in that era of bondage. "Ole Miss" comes from the shortened version of "Ole Missy", the name slaves would have called the wife of the planation owner. The daughter of the plantaion owner was the "young miss", the wife the "ole miss.""

I'm not going to read this thread, because I'm pretty certain it's fricking stupid.

I've always been told "Ole Miss" orginated as a derivation of the antebellum term for a landowner's wife. I've never hear anyone honestly claim it is a contraction of "Old Mississippi" or some sort of misspelling.

Dude this is Mississippi. Our state flag has the confederate flag in it
You sure about that?
You aren't exactly correct. Look up the Stars and Bars. Later national flags did incorporate the battle flag. However, the more commonly known battle flag is not THE Confederate Flag.

I'm genuinely curious. What in my post was flame worthy?
*Edit* A quick google search brings up tons of results, including an old SI article, though I'm not sure why they call it a "slave" term since it doesnt involve slaces being called anything:

The very term Ole Miss is not a contraction of "Old Mississippi," but an old slave term—a plantation owner's daughter was called "the young miss" and his wife "the old miss."

My step-mom has a daughter named Stacey and a daughter-in-law named Stacey. One is slender and younger (daughter), the other is big-boned and older (son's wife). She calls thin Stacey "Little Stacey" and she calls the big-boned one "Big Stacey"
