Kansas had a QB a few years ago that earned a MBA (IIRC) before he was done on the field and didn't even put his name in the draft, it was the year they went to the Orange Bowl, I'm sure Mizzou fans know his name.
Most hardcore college football fans could tell you who Todd Reesing was, but not the other details.

Still don't understand why the hell he was redshirted.

Johnny Manziel's first semester was Spring of 2011. (graduated HS early)
Spring 2011
Fall 2011
Spring 2012
Fall 2012
He already has 4 semesters worth of coursework.

Same reason Aaron Murray has already graduated and is half way through a phd program, and still has another year of eligibility.
It's Magic.

'years' of eligibility and 'academic classification' are two different animals, measured with a different stick.
Academic classification is measured in the number of credit hours you have accumalated. If you get enough credit hours accumulated by halfway through your 2nd year for example, you could be a junior academically, but still a redshirt freshman or sophomore by football (calendar years) eligibility.
Some high school graduates have already accumulated some college credit hours before they even step foot on the campus, if they took certain classes in high school.
