what is the common consensus on the guy as a motivator, disciplinarian, x's and o's, etc?

Obviously y'all had a great season, and in large part due to a freak of nature frosh quarterback who could probably run around in circles for a while, without an actual footbal play being called, and still make a great play

The reason that I ask is that LSU got a certain coach in the early 90's who had some success, also b/c of a rather good quarterback. And this guy came to be a horrible bust when he didn't have said superstar.
**ETA: this coach's success was pre-LSU

Time will tell, I guess. Just thought I'd see what your thoughts were.

See what he has done this year in the SEC with basically the same guys as Sherman last year in the Big 12.

Coach Sumlin is light years better than Fat Fran or Sleepy Sherman.

This year was a fluke.
Next year we win zero games.

Like everything about the guy. I pray he's a long-termer because he'll make us a contender most years.

Loaded question.

"Please tell me that this guy isn't the real deal and that A&M isn't going to own LSU for the next decade."

All I heard.

If you watched all the aggie games this season and watched not only the progression of JFF but all aspects of the play on the field improve week to week...you can see that Sumlin and his staff are pretty damn good.

Yeah Johnny's a freak, but dude was still a freshman this year...he wouldnt have done what he did without Sumlin and Kingsbury

To act like A&M would have been this successful without Manziel is foolish, but to think that Sumlin isn't aware of that is, would also be foolish. His number one focus is recruiting. He might not go down as the greatest recruiter on the planet, but he will always have superstars. Always.

Truth, I'm convinced 3/4 of SEC fans don't even know that we had a first round top 10 NFL pick who's been starting the entire season last year. Sumlin and co. would have done a LOT better with last year's team.

But in reality it's a lazy question. Sumlin has been extremely succesfull at every stop along the way. No reason to even ask if his success this year is legit. Just do some homework. Your question is baited with hope.

The great thing about Sumlin is he is willing to adjust.

Showers would have been an amazing QB in the Sumlin system he ran at Houston last year, but Johnny was a heisman candidate in his own system. He added zone read, qb draws, option, and a lot of trickeration to get Johnny into space. Look what that did.

He's recruiting on a Jackie Sherril level. If he pulls in the type of talent he has in our two current recruiting classes, he won't ever be short on super star potential. Then with his willingness to adjust to those stars talents, the sky is the limit.

Tannehill is a a great athlete with legit speed. He doesn't have Johnny's elusiveness, but he can get upfield if he needs to. I wonder what Sumlin would have been able to do with the 2011 A&M team.
