Move Over Ags; Forget 1939

Ags, you should be aware that USC has claimed the 1939 football national championship. Several years ago they added the year 1939 to their list of national championships painted in big numbers on the outside of their football stadium. Apparently, someone working at their school discovered that a couple of obscure polls actually voted the Trojans #1 in 1939 (see links below). USC's practice is to claim itself champions in all years that it was voted #1 in any final poll, no matter how minor or obscure the poll. Using that approach LSU could claim 7 football championships & TAMU could claim 5; however, there were only 3 championship flags in Tiger Stadium the last time I visited.

They started claiming that as a title during the Carroll years, and it's on the same level as Bama's 41 and UT's 67.

Don't care. People can claim all the national titles they want. It makes no difference to me.

I watched every game that USC and A&M played in 39. We were better.

The problem was Tennessee in the Rose Bowl is 0-2 and Bama is 4-1-1 during a similar time frame. Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and Tulane were all undefeated in conference play that season. Sadly back then the SEC did not have a CCG to determine a winner so we will never know.
In those early polls the MNC was determined prior to the bowl games so more than a few schools would have to give up their MNC claims if U$C policy on the 39' game was accepted as gospel. The bigger question was if that 39' Trojan team used under inflated balls to beat the Vols that day?

That is what is great about the whole playoff thing hitting as we are getting good.

That '39 Cornell team was the GOAT. If you took Bama's defense and A&M's offense in 2012 and played them, Cornell would win by 50.

Just don't understand this attitude. Another school is parading your only national championship as their own? I thought apathetic Ags were few & far between...

this is not new. USC has done this for as long as I can remember. That is why I wasn't so upset when we claimed 1919 and 1921.

How can we stop them? Sue? Burn down the stadium?
Nope, the response is to do the same thing.
Hence our national championship count tripling overnight.

It's the poll era. If you look up AP National Champs in 1939... Only one team is listed. If you care about a title from back then, you probably look up how they were awarded. It is what it is.
