I think Bama didn't hire Croom because they knew whoever they brought in was going to have a tough time doing well with the sanctions and probation. They didn't want to bring in the first African American coach, have him fail miserably and then have to fire him. It was easy to fire Shula.

Worked out well. State did something to the first black coach in SEC history that they never would have done to one of their other coaches in the same scenario.

I think if Bear had a say in things, he would have chosen Croom.
