You need a balance of micro-management and letting the coordinators do their damn job.
You then need someone who can recruit and inspire players.
BVG hates recruiting iirc, being a reason why he was gone from georgia southern after a year.
To paraphrase Shug, "If they don't think an Auburn man can get the job done, they ought to shut the place down".
Having someone with ties to AU and a passion for returning AU to prominence is paramount. It's time to stop looking for pedigrees and find someone who's passion will transfer to the players.
Coordinators are for the Xs and Os shite. Head coaches are for motivation, discipline, and program pride. Plus, to go against the machine that currently resides in-state, the next HC is going to need one hell of an axe to grind to stay motivated.
I have no idea who would fit the criteria I listed, just thinking out loud.

Would Dameyune Craig be out of the question here?

Sorry, this is just not true in the slightest. If the head coach doesn't have a direct impact on one side or the other of the ball then you are forever going to have trouble being consistently good. You are then at the mercy of your OC and DC hires, which will make it impossible to be good for long periods of time.
You need guys like Saban, Spurrier, Kelly, etc who are pretty much the DC or OC on their side of the ball, then one side is always consistent. Then the only blips will be those caused by new hires on the other side of the ball.
Our most successful times at Auburn occurred with Dye in control of our defenses to a large extent, and Tubs as our defensive mind for the most part. Hell, until his crap recruiting caught up with him, Tater Tot had us very successful.
It's simply much easier to replace one coordinator every 3-4 years than try and replace two every 3-4. It's hard to be succesful over a 10 year period doing that.
