Got to get everyone excited about the ESPN documentary coming on Tuesday. Whooop

It was a huge fluff piece, but Croom did run a clean program and set a foundation for Mullen to build on.
I liked Croom as a person, he just wasn't a very good head coach when it came to developing talent and winning games.

A lot of bull shite in it. Makes me sick.
Meh. We were terrible at football, but I don't really care if ESPN wants to paint a pretty picture for those years. It's over and done. I just wish I didn't have to endure those shitty years while I was actually enrolled.

The 1 thing I bet the documentary is missing that every State fan would like to hear is an espn guy asking Croom, "When your offense was 1 of the worst in college football for 5 years running, why wouldnt you move on from McCorvey since it wasnt working?"

This is a huge fallacy. I believe Croom had more players arrested under him than Sherrill did in his time.

Also, do we really have 15 starters that Croom signed?

The only starters he "signed" are Arceto Clark, Tobias Smith, McCardell(depending on package), and Broomfield. Those guys actually spent one year under Croom.
They are giving him credit for the 09 class as well, which includes Slay, Perkins, Bumphis, Jackson, Skinner, Boyd, Whitley, Banks, Smith, Russell, and Lawrence.

Croom came in and brought national attention to our university and did it in a noble manner. That is all he did. He treated the job like we couldn't do any better. He came in and said that it would take years to turn our program around. He had a 5 yr plan for everything that always started next year. He didn't go out on his own terms. He was kicked out after letting OM score 45 unanswered points on us in an epically embarrassing shutout. Greg Byrnes was so furious that he would not even attend the post game show with Croom. There is a lot of revisionist history in the article.

What a joke
The guy was an awful head coach
We had a ton of arrests, he refused to recruit. But hey, he didn't cheat.
ETA: And he had the attitude that we were Mississippi State and we shouldn't expect to win more than 4-5 games a year.
I am happy to say I stole his golf cart on multiple occassions, so maybe he lost a few lbs walking.

I really don't see what was so bad about that article.
That being said, screw Templeton for hiring Croom. I'm glad we have real leadership at our university now.

Wasn't it common knowledge at the time though that Templeton turned down Gary Patterson and Jimbo Fisher in favor of Crxxm so the NCAA would slack up on our Sherrill shenanigans? I find it hard to stomach that LT would turn down two coaches that were interested in State because he felt Croom would be the better hire.

From what I heard, it wasn't Templeton pushing for Croom. It was the alumni association. The president of the association at the time was a phuckin idiot that knows absolutely nothing about sports.

Ive always been under the understanding that Templeton made the Croom Error

He did, but we are still saying the same thing.

I dont' remember gary Patterson's name ever being said but Jimbo was asked on the news about the opening and his response was he was very interested in the job.
But we got Croom. His name really came out of nowhere and the first time I heard his name was on a Green Bay MNF game about him being interviewed. Then I knew it was a done deal.
A lot of us on Sixpack were on the Charlie Strong and Jimbo Fisher wish list. Some even mentioned Randy Shannon. But both Charlie Strong and Randy Shannon said they were never contacted by the school.
