Your right on the penalty however,I see alot of these helmets coming off during play not after the play is dead.
Define "a lot"
Cite examples where it was intentional (if so rule book covers that as well)

A lot worse rules than the helmet rule. Kickoff rule for one.

At the Tech - Rice game Tech was called 17 times for violation of the rule. Need to start giving out some penalties if the NCAA really wants to put some teeth in the rule.
1-5 infractions during the game - 5 yd. penalty
5-10 infractions - 10 yds.
Over 10 infractions - 15 yds.
That ought to do it.

Although I think the intentions of the rule are good, I think that something needs to be added to the rule about penalizing players that pull other players helmets off.
Yeah, this sounds reasonable. Instead of just ditching a useless rule, make another pathetic rule to patch up the first pathetic rule. You'd make a good politician.

Are you serious?

I'm pretty sure they aren't going to ditch the rule. What the hell, let's just keep letting them pull each others helmets off.
The rule has a purpose. When I was working with football, I had hell trying to get the kids to wear their helmet correctly. If a player dies as a result of a head injury or is paralyzed as a result of a c spine injury the helmet company can not be held liable if the helmet is not properly fitted.

I was watching the Virginia vs. Penn State game week before last and a UVA guy got flagged fifteen yards for trying to make a tackle after his helmet had come off. That is stupid.

That is my point the rule as it exist today gives an incentive to pull someone helmet off. That is why I started this topic. If this rule continues to exist you will see other players trying to pull helmets off star players to keep them out of the game.

You have an official reference for that or is that just your number?
The national avg is less than 2/game.

I left after the third quarter and estimated about 15. A Tech fan posted in another thread that a friend of his at the game counted the 17 times for the whole game.
Official enough for me. You?

The Helmet Rule
Sucks. Too much taking advantage of it by defenses.

Why do people think that helmets are being pulled off players by the defense left and right? It's simply not happening that often. And it's a penalty to grab any opening on a helmet (facemask, earhole, underneath the back of the helmet). If a defender is able to pull a player's helmet off without grabbing one of those places then the helmet is not secured properly. There's just not this gigantic loophole that people think there is. And if you think that more helmets are coming off this year then in previous years it's only because you are noticing it more when it happens now that there are consequences.

Did not know you worked with football. Were you a trainer?

Riiiiight. Funny thing, not a single mention by ANY sports related news agency or anything from their conference or a mention from the CFO about such a number. Since it's EIGHT times the average they would have made note of it.
IOW, you pulled the number out of your arse.
