Starting #1 in the polls because of winning the title the year before.

I was talking with an older guy this morning and he was adamant about the champion from the previous year being #1 in the polls to start the season, only because they won the title the previous year.
Is there a lot of people that really believe this?
It makes no sense to me. What does the SEC Rant think?

I think it makes no sense whatsoever... how many times have we even had a repeat champion. The previous year's NC almost never repeats, therefore does not deserve a #1 ranking in the preseason.

Ehhh, I could see why people feel that way.

They are always referred to as the defending national champs. Might as well rank them #1 until someone beats them I suppose.

It's stupid as frick. A new year is just that, a new year. It makes no logical sense whatsoever for someone to be ranked arbitrarily simply because of what they did last year. If a team went 8-4 last year and finished unranked, but returns all 22 starters should they automatically be unranked? What if that #1 team lost 20 starters from the year before?

You should rank the teams based on the current season, common sense. And honestly, there shouldn't even be any polls until October but that's another discussion.

I understand both arguments, don't think it's a big deal one way or the other.

preseason polls are stupid, but if they must do them then to me the only logical thing to do is just to rank everybody where they were ranked at the end of last season. At least that is based on what teams earned instead of guesses analysts

Show the old guy this site. They have the same legitimacy as any preseason poll. The champ stays on top until they get beat and so on...and WVU is the defending champ FWIW.

I've always thought that official rankings should begin after 3-4 games have been played.

Who really gives a shite? This is nothing more than LSU fans inferiority complex showing its ugly face again. If you believe that preseason polls are meaningless, which I personally do, then who cares.

Should not be the determining factor. Sure if you don't graduate anyone.

Each team is different from the previous year.

I think it's obvious Bama will be much improved over last year. SEC ffuuuuucccckkkked
