What is his role? Is he simply a figure head or is he actually coaching? Any word on how the players are responding to him?

It seems that the coordinators will do most of the coaching. But, I know that the players all really like him and respond to him well. I think he is there to try and keep things afloat at the management level and let the coordinators run much of the game calling. Having said that I am sure he is acting similar to many "hands off" coaches and would like to take credit for any successes the team has.
