Yes I am in industry and have a great job... Are you? Would making a general statement emphasizing the term 'average' have any bearing on what I'm saying? Did I ever say intelligent people didn't graduate from Arkansas? No. I said on average they are not as smart. That is the truth. Texas kids at Arkansas, on average, again, on average could not get in to A&M or tu. With 29 million some odd people, when your collective crop is more selective than at Arkansas, on average, again, on average. You get smarter kids. Between every Aggie and Arkansas is the smartest a piggie? I don't give a frick. The smartest 100 could be piggies and that wouldn't contradict anything I've said. If you are a smart and successful person, Arkansas wouldn't limit you in anyway whatsoever. A&M is still light years ahead.

Omg one negative thing about Arkansas and shite shite storm comes. Intelligent people can graduate from anywhere, this isn't about that. This is about setting them up for the best chance of success. Intelligent people fulfil their potential better at A&M than at Arkansas. A&M is just a better education, hands down. You don't have to be bitter about it, it is just the truth. Higher starting salaries, more prestigious degree, and a more extensive network. I'm sorry that makes you butthurt.
the sad thing is that I think you actually believe this. I'm certainly not jumping on the arkansas bandwagon, but please, A&M is NOT considered some high level academic school in the business world...I can tell you that for fact. You are in texas and surrounded by this belief obviously...but it isn't like this outside of your little small area. wow

A lot depends on:
1. Your kids grades. Where can they get in? Given the HOPE scholarship in Georgia and similar in Florida, both UGA and UF have become very difficult to get into. HIGH SAT and good HS grades are minimum reuqirements.
2. This had knock on effect with Auburn because a lot of the Georgia and Florida kids who just missed getting into UGA or UF, applied at Auburn and raised the academic requirement there as well.
3. What can you afford? Our daughter goes to Georgia because she got the HOPE scholarship and other academic merit awards. We would have preferred that she go to Auburn, but the cost difference is big.
4. What do they want to major in? If you want to be a doctor, dont go to Auburn (unless a vet.) LSU and Florida and some others have a med school. If you want to be an engineer then Auburn or one of the other schools with an engineering or architecture department would be on the cards. Georgia and especially Missouri are well known for their journalism schools. Auburns vet school, and Georgias are both nationally renound.
5. Does the kid want to be in a fraternity etc? Some schools have very strong greek organizations, and while thats not a critical factor, it weighs in.
6. Party schools...some are to be avoided and some are destinations... Ole Miss as example. Georgia is also pretty well known for its partying. Florida is legendary on this level.
7. School size. Some SEC schools are about 50K in student body size. A lot of kids dont want that or do not thrive in that. Florida has some classes that are so big that you can watch the course from home on cable. I know a colleague who left Florida to attend U of North Florida because she didnt like the class size issues at UF at the undergrad level.
8. If your kid is a redneck gomer, then theres only one place to go and thats Bama.

Restricting your childrens college choices based on a football team is selfish, shortsighted, ignorant.
And literally does you no good.
In general principal, I agree. At the end of the day, it is for the kids to decide - but as a parent, would you not have input? If so, which schools in the SEC would you choose for your children? For purposes of this mental fap exercise, you aren't making the decision for them, only trying to guide them in a particular direction.

I'm an engineer. I don't work for any of the big 4. Nor did I ever say A&M was thought of as the highest. I know that my friend at EY recruited and hired a kid at A&M below the threshold, and he said he was never allowed to do that for Sooners, even though he wanted to. A&M is a better school than OU, is that such a shocking thing to say? He is a Sooner and would readily admit that. Does that mean every single Aggie is better than every single Sooner? No. No it does not.

absolute bs..you ran across the wrong person here who is several years of experience in the big 6....I know many people at the big 6 who did not have the 3.5 but had common sense and good people skills. There are many with 3.5 and much higher that are challenged with people skills and therefore you wouldn't want to have them representing your firm at your client. I can't believe you actually believe what you are saying.

All of them could provide quality educations. It should not surprise anyone that the better schools are A&M, Florida, Mizzou, and Vandy. That being said I would say Vandy for undergraduate and A&M for graduate. To know why this is, people need to understand things like the AAU, NSF, and research productivity.
I am from Arkansas attended UArk for undergraduate and it was great. I loved being there and think I received a quality education. I am now at A&M for graduate school and it is so much better of an academic university it is not even comparable. I do not say this lightly. The level of faculty salaries, teaching loads, graduate funding, and research funding is ridiculous here. A&M wants to be a top public university and has made amazing strides in recent years. Our graduate program in ranked 19th in the country and there are numerous others at that level here as well. Most SEC schools simply are not on that level.
I like to make fun of Aggies, and I certainly do not get Aggieland or support the athletic program. As far as academics go though, it is tough not to be impressed.

I have no idea what is usual for engineers but 3 girls I know graduated in ChemE from LSU in May 2011 and they all make 80k now. That sounds pretty good to me

I respectfully disagree, and I'm coming from an Arky undergrad and I go to a "better" grad school than A&M. I feel they are extremely similar, with the only noticeable difference being the networking that exists. However, this has nothing to do with the education you receive there, but rather how easy it may be to get a job afterwards.

Solid.
For most, to choose based on educational rankings alone would not necessarily give the whole "college" experience. It's not just "Timmy will make $xxx, xxx a year after he graduates" - but will be a combination of after graduation opportunities, and "college" experience opportunities.

Several factors to consider, such as what major your kid plans to study, what kind of social scense would be best for him/her, where you live and thus would be in-state, any scholarship offers, how far away it would be, etc.
Trying to speak generally, I'd be happy to send my kid to Vandy, Auburn, or Georgia. Vandy obviously has the best academics. Auburn's academics are decent and I think it is a great environment (third generation Auburn grad-I'd be proud to send a fourth). Georgia has good academics and a good environment.
Florida and Texas A&M have good academics, though I am not as sold on the environment. If that is what they wanted, that would be fine.
I'd really hate to send a kid to Bama, though I admit it is a decent university. Missouri is an okay university, but not really Southern, so I would be a bit hesitant.
The others are all a bit lower on academics (again, depending on specific major there could be an exception).

Just looking at salary can be highly misleading too because of cost of living. Costs a hell of a lot less to live in Bentonville, Rogers or Little Rock than Houston or other big cities. Companies pay more in those areas to keep up with the higher cost of living.

Vandy, obviously. Otherwise I don't really have a preference, they are all large state universities and field of study will matter more than school of choice for a 4 year degree.

That list is pretty impressive for LSU considering how cheap it is for in-state students.
