A&M fans, when did the tradition of walk-ons being KO team end?

I think it was jackie S who started this, I always thought this was cool and that they did great- when and why did it end? Thanks

I thought Fran ended it but could be wrong
I know it wasn't RC

UGA uses walkons all the damn time on KO. Not because it's a tradition, just because we do some headscratching things on ST.

R.C. WAS the one who ended it, and started the only one walk-on being on the 12th man deal. Fran actually brought it back, but only used it when we were up by a large margin, which kind of defeated the purpose. I don't think they came on much.
Damn shame, the suicide squad was really effective and a really unique feature of A&M football. Such is life.

It was RC. I don't remember the exact year, but I know I was in school, which would put it in the early 90s.

Edit: Oh, I thought you meant when was it the whole team. RC stopped doing it.

Those motherfrickers on the 12th Man KO team were crazy SOBs. You could count on a fight being started pretty regularly.

as CF fan, I LOVED it, why did they end it? I thought the team was always way up in ko coverage? Did they give up some big plays?

I stand corrected then, I guess it was RC
still that is surprising, to me anyway

He stopped it in the opening game of 90 or 91... can't remember. Someone took back the opening kickoff and he nixed it.

RC Slocum ended the tradition of the ENTIRE kickoff team (minus the kicker) being walk-ons.
We still have a walk-on on every kick off ... #12

It also was the walkon's only job on the team. That is all they lived for and would do just about anything to themselves to make sure they got the tackle.
I believe they were also the ones that really got the student body to start the towel waving tradition going. The walkons would carry them around campus to get everyone riled up and pumped up for the games.
As for why he got rid of it..several theories are out there:
1)Slocum personally says it was due to an allowed touchdown return against tech one game. I think this is a bit of a load of crap, but he sticks to it.
2)some say it was due to "travel restrictions" and the 85 man roster, and didnt feel it was a good use of practice time to train 2 separate teams....whatever. restrictions were there for Jackie too i believe.
3)Is the ever popular, "he didn't like it because it was jackie's idea"
usually you will find some kind of combination of these three though.

It should be re-instituted for home games.
Benefits:
1. Fewer injuries to scholly players.
2. Huge game-day factor, especially at Kyle.
3. Novelty. Nobody else does it or ever has if I am not mistaken.
Costs:
1. Extra Uniforms. Whoppy-fricking-do.
2. Fewer reps for away kickoff team. Whoppy-fricking-do.
3. ???
4. Profit?
It ain't no big deal to train two squads and if somebody goes down on the kickoff squad, you have a group of walk-ons to chose from that are ready to go to the traveling roster.

I completely agree with you.
I was just giving the top 3 common theories behind the move.
you are def not alone in opposing fans or even a few A&M fans that don't really like it. It has really toned down since i've been watching A&M though. But they usually always come out in force for the big games(see the OU/Neb 2010 games, any texas game, ect). Also the biggest ones will coincide with a cheap sell of them directly before the games for around $1

while it was very popular with the students and others it was probably NOT popular with scholarship guys trying to earn a spot in the two deep. also, coaches use special teams to give some players at least some pt. hell there are 85 guys on the team and they think they are nfl material.
