You're right. 2003. It was odd because it was the first hurricane I experienced that came ashore during the day. The party that preceded was awesome. Clean-up sucked. 5 days with no power for us. Sweet dreams to generator humming.

Yea cleanup sucked, especially with all the trees around.
Lucky. We were without for 8 days, and I think parts of Richmond were without for 2+ weeks. Also in the 12 years I lived in Richmond, I think that was the hottest I remember it being in late Sep. I do wish we had power so I could of watched that VT-A&M game though. I bet that would of been interesting. Driving rain, and 50+/- mph winds. Recipe for comedy if you don't have a dog in the fight(other than always wanting VT to lose)

Hurricanes don't do that much damage 150 miles from the coast.
dude, i think it was hurricane ivan(can't remember exactly) that ripped through the alabama town that we lived in (that is about 150 miles from the coast)....tore the town up, we didn't have power for 3 or 4 days. it did major damage as far as montgomery and up to birmingham. that was one of the scariest things i have ever experienced.

I'm a bit of a weather nerd and remember Hurricane Gilbert well. To say it "weakened" isnt exactly correct. Gilbert was a monster hurricane that broke the record for lowest barometric pressure up until that point in 1988. It was a strong Cat 5 and one of the largest hurricanes ever. It was forecast to curve into the Gulf and possibly hit Texas but never made the turn. In hindset, it was dumb of Curry not to wait an extra day to see that the storm wasn't heading for Texas. On the other hand, Hurricane Gilbert was a monster Cat 5 storm. Fortunately OT stayed south and hit the Yucatan and not Texas.

Yeah, Ivan was at 130 mph when it hit Orange Beach/Perdido Beach. It was still a hurricane at Selma 120 miles inland. I'll never forget seeing the local forecast even that far inland calling for souteast winds of 75 to 85 mph with gusts to 100 even that far inland. Witnessing that kind of wind blowing through large pine trees is incredibly intimidating.

had a copy of that game laying around the house for years, Robert Stewart was a FB for Bama in 1988. I think he got suspended in 1989 but when he came back, he switched to noseguard. He was a beast

I was a junior in high school when Ivan hit. I went to school at Oxford which is on I-20 roughly half-way between Birmingham and Atlanta. They canceled school for Thursday and Friday of that week in anticipation of Ivan's arrival. We got a little bit of wind and rain. Nothing major at all. In hindsight, we got two days off for nothing.
