You still haven't provided your reasoning to support WHY you think the Big 12 is set up well.

Well they have now signed over their 1st and 2nd tier media rights for the next 13 years and they have a solid TV deal in place. Seems like a great starting point to get headed in the right direction.

Official press release:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference and the Big 12 Conference announced today a five-year agreement for their football champions to meet in a post-season bowl game following the 2014 season.

The champions of the two conferences will be in the matchup unless one or both are selected to play in the new four-team model to determine the national championship. Should that occur, another deserving team from the conference(s) would be selected for the game.

“A new January bowl tradition is born,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. “This new game will provide a great match-up between the two most successful conferences in the BCS era and will complement the exciting post-season atmosphere created by the new four-team model. Most importantly, it will provide our student-athletes, coaches and fans with an outstanding bowl experience.”

“Our goal is to provide the fans across the country with a New Year’s Day prime-time tradition,” commented acting Big 12 Conference Commissioner Chuck Neinas. “This is a landmark agreement between two of the most successful football conferences during the BCS era to stage a post-season event. The creation of this game featuring the champions of the Big 12 and SEC will have tremendous resonance in college football.”

“I am very excited by the prospects for a game between our champion and the champion of the Southeastern Conference,” added in-coming Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

During the 14-year history of the Bowl Championship Series the Big 12 and SEC lead the nation with 11 seasons in which each conference has had at least one team ranked in the top four of the final BCS standings. Both conferences share the top spot all-time with 14 teams each that have finished in the top four of the final BCS Standings. The two conferences have combined for 16 appearances in the BCS National Championship Game, with the Big 12 ranking second behind the SEC’s nine appearances with seven trips to the National Championship Game.

The two league champions have met twice in BCS bowl games since 1998, both in BCS National Championship Games. In 2010, Alabama defeated Texas, 37-21, in Pasadena, Cal., and in 2009, Florida defeated Oklahoma, 24-14, in Miami, Fla.

Specific details, including host site(s), will be announced at a later date.

Maybe you just had to be there, but I think the Aggies will back me up in saying that from having been there, I know to a certainty there is just no such thing as a 'right direction' for that league anymore, unless you're the Texas Longhorns. It's a toxic, backstabbing pirate ship of a league and OU is only there as a hostage b/c the PAC shot them down...but OU well knows that the non-granting of third tier rights coupled with greater equalization of first and second tier revenue actually was a subtle move by UT that strongly favors them to OU's detriment since UT's third tier money is so massive that they will wind up profiting by an even wider margin over OU than they did previously when the first and second tier revenue was unevenly distributed and favored both UT and OU.

Point being, it's still a ticking time bomb and there will be plenty more internal strife on the way. There always was in that league and always will be.

This new deal with the SEC is another impressive move for such a hopeless league as described by the Aggies. I think they're just fighting a losing battle trying to convince people they left because the Big 12 is dying instead of the truth, that they were tired of being put down and owned by big brother Texas so they gave up.

That's actually a bad thing. The fact that if you join the conference, not only do you only get a partial share of the revenue the first 3 years (TCU, WVU), but your rights are signed away for several years. That will keep quality schools from joining and only attract schools who are truly desperate and have no other options.

I agree with you. I think that the days of thinking the Big 12 was going to implode are long gone. I did not always think it was this way. Texas and especially OU found out two things, the grass isnt always greener and they dont have the control and options that they thought they did. Those two things have led them to play nice or risk more.

Those programs left in the Big 12 that had no options or no room to negotiate really should be thanking the teams that left because they have brought about significant change in the way the power brokers in the Big 12 operate.
