I mean, it's SB Nation, yeah, but thought it was kinda funny since some of us have had effectively this exact conversation on here before.
I'd be all for it.

When the Southern Conference became unwieldy because it contained too many schools spread out too far geographically, there was a mass exodus from the league, and the Southeastern Conference was the result. The SEC appears to be heading in the same direction as the successor to the old SIAA, and it may be time for the world to turn once more. I say get while the getting is good and make a clean break by choice rather than necessity.
Get Auburn, Florida, and South Carolina on board. (I’m guessing some Gator fans, at least, wouldn’t be hard to convince.) While we’re going and getting Georgia Tech on board, get the other three to go convince Alabama, Florida State, and Clemson to come with us. Since taking Alabama means taking Tennessee, and since taking Tennessee means taking Vanderbilt, go grab them, too. After that, fill up the last two spots with somebody---Kentucky if Tennessee insists; N.C. State if you just need a warm body---and form a twelve-team, two-division league with a championship game, and now you’re in business.

I would rather lose every single game and be in the toughest conference than win in a wimpy one. See f$u in the ACC, 90's.

frick that, I would rather be FSU or Va. Tech. I don't want to be a Mississippi school.

Alabama (7)
Auburn (13)
Clemson
Florida
Florida State
Georgia (11)
Georgia Tech (17)
South Carolina
Tennessee (9)
Vanderbilt
That's five of the top 25 winningest programs of all time, plus Florida and Florida State, who have been powerhouses since the 90s, and USC and Clemson, who are playing some of their best football ever right now.
How the hell is that a wimpy conference?

You make a good point, but I love the SEC even though it sucks Bama'a sack. Also, If were were to go to another conference why bring Alabama? I mean they already have the advantage in the SEC.

That's about the dumbest thing I think I've ever heard.

So because several schools split off in the 30s because of geographic concerns, it would make sense to do it again?
Are AU and UGA still traveling to every game by train?

I definitely think the long term future is going to be for smaller conferences(6-8 schools) or maybe super conferences, but with isolated divisions(that don't play each other, or play sparingly) the narrow scheduling window that the 14 team conferences necessitate is just going to arouse more and more opposition as time goes by. Most teams only play about 5 or 6 teams that they are committed to keeping on their schedule--at the most.

And that's why it's probably a good idea to read the article in question before spewing dumb shite all over a thread.

Good luck convincing Free Shoes to do that.

Article was retarded, and you chose to quote the most retarded part, so I responded to it. Don't like it? Don't be retarded.

If you want to go... go. Alabama will go indy and get the ND treatment. All we'll need is a 9 win season.

I read the article and it all boils down to how UGA can't play who they want all the time because they're in the SEC.

His whole argument is basically:
quote:
I, as a Georgia fan, want to play Auburn, Florida, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and---yes, Gamecock fans, I’m getting to y’all---South Carolina in football every year,
So why realign everything and frick up the whole conference just for some poor Georgia fan's sake? If it's that important to UGA, just go independent.

The article's ultimately about how all the SEC expansion is killing traditional rivalries, both intra- and inter-conference. I chose to quote primarily the new conference idea section, with the preceding section to give a slight bit of context.
Obviously it's a fringe idea, but it's been discussed basically verbatim on here before by some of us AU & UGA fans, so I figured I'd bring it over here.

I think concerns over these imminent leviathan conferences are legit. The whole reason for conferences is for teams to band together their power and influence, but as conferences grow larger teams actually lose power and influence. It almost defeats the purpose. Not saying I'm opposed to it, but acting like there's no legitimate reason for anyone to ever leave the SEC is just shortsighted.
