No, it's a result of being too loyal and not having the balls to fire a friend.

Phillip Fulmer
Phase 1 1992-2001
Phase 2 2002-2004
Phase 3 2005-2008

Jeebus, thanks for not posting Phase 1 post-Fulmer

Why did you pick those dates? You've got a 10 year stretch, then 3, then 4. Seems like they were picked pretty much randomly.

This is actually a really good point that I've thought a little bit about this offseason. Take this theory, apply it to the schedule we have + our returning D + a 3rd year starter at QB + our deepest OL since '02 = ?

Phase 1 was 2001-2005. 2001 was his first year ever as a head coach and had some expected ups and downs. New coordinators, new system, new players, etc. Year 2 of this phase produced Richt's greatest team to date. We finished 13-1, SEC and Sugar Bowl champs, and #3 in the country. By far Richt's best phase.
Made possible by the departure of Steve Spurrier from Florida and the steady decline of Tennessee football.

Phase 2, 2006-2010. Pretty bad phase. 2006 saw the beginning of a new OC, a freshman QB, year 2 of an incompetent DC and a sorry LB coach, and the start of a complete erosion of discipline and fundamentals. However, in year 2 of this phase we had arguably Richt's 2nd best team to date. 11-2, Sugar Bowl champs, and finished #2 in the country.
Made possible by the rise of Florida under Urban Meyer as well as one final gasp by Tennessee toward relevance.

Phase 3, 2011-current. This phase is much more reminiscent of phase 1 than 2. The discipline, toughness, and fundamentals that were highlighted phase 1 that were sorely lacking in phase 2 look to have returned. Our staff is light years better than phase 2. Our DC is cut from the same cloth as our first one was. We have a very good QB and a great defense. Taking all of that combined with our favorable schedule, I think that the 3rd "year 2" of Richt's tenure could be the best yet.
Made possible by the fall of Florida and the complete implosion of Tennessee. When South Carolina is the only threat in your division you know you have it easy.

ahhh, so georgia accomplished nothing by itself but instead what we accomplish is a direct result of how UT or UF is doing
Posted on 4/10/12 at 12:47 pm to RollTide1987
There are MANY factors that went into us having the years we had when we did. UF and UT being up or down certainly had a part in it, but I don't think it's a coincidence that at the same time, we were fielding our worst teams under Richt as well. I don't care how good or bad other teams are, when you field teams like we did in 2006, 2009, and 2010 it's not going to be pretty regardless.
Also, UGA can't help how good other teams are. That is completely and totally out of our hands, all we can do is play the games. And give some credit where it's due, Richt has beaten Bama, LSU, Auburn, UT, a lot of teams when those teams were very good as well.

This is true. But when those other teams are good, they steer recruits away from Georgia. Georgia wasn't that great last year, despite what your 10-3 record might show. The East was just THAT bad.

I wouldn't call beating 2007 Bama a huge accomplishment.

Did I mention that game specifically? Yall were pretty good in 2002, and according to some of yalls fans could've won the SEC that year.

And also it must be said that in the last 30 years there has probably been no program that has underachieved more than the Georgia Bulldogs. Since Georgia's last national championship all of its chief rivals have won it all on at least one occasion (Georgia Tech, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, and Auburn). Georgia has been recruiting lights out for the last 20 years and has only two conference titles to show for it.

The only Bama teams I'd say were good in the 2000's were the 05, 08, 09, and 10 teams.
Richt has beaten some good teams. He's also been at Georgia for a long while with not much hardware to show for it. Will Georgia fans continue to be happy with 9-10 win seasons, or will there be a line drawn somewhere?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We've recruited very well, nobody will deny that. Anytime you bring in top 10 talent you're positioning yourself for big things. However, we've seen in recent memory that you need more than top 10 talent, you need top 3 talent. Bama, Florida, and LSU's titles as of late have come at the heels of top 1 or 2 recruiting classes. And not just one, a string of several in a row. Good coaching goes a long way for sure, but it also helps to have more talent than the other team for all but maybe 1 game you play.
Also, even if you don't have a run of top 3 classes it doesn't matter if you have a megastar that transcends the game. Cam Newton and Vince Young singlehandedly won their teams national titles. UGA hasn't had anybody like that, and we've never had a top 2 class under Richt. 2 years ago we were 4th, and we had some MAJOR contributers from it. Then we took a step back last year.
Sooo....yeah, we've recruited well under Richt. But we haven't recruited "lights out" the way other SEC teams have.

Someone please just tell WG that UG is going to be great and will win the East easily.
That's all he wants to hear.
Ah crap, I'll do it.
UG is great. Will win the East. Schedule is soft.
UF is down forever. Boom sucks. Will never win anything at UF. Terrible hire.
