There are academic scholarships which are for four years. There is one stipulation-the student has to maintain a specific GPA. I don't know the exact language, but there are also some requirements of athletes to maintain their scholarships. They can't skip practices and workouts and still get the free ride.
To me the four year academic and athletic scholarships are the same. If you work hard and do what's expected, you will have earned a four year scholly.

Which is my point. If you meet the requirements, whether it "four year" or "year-to-year", you'll remain. I don't see what all the fuss is about. I was on an academic scholarship at Alabama. I lost it after my first year. Luckily I improved enough to regain it.
