In a single game against Bama in 1970...

The kicker, there wasn't a three point line back then...

I'm not sure that Alabama team even won 10 games all season in 1969-1970. LSU was good, finishing 2nd in the SEC and going to the NIT Final Four. Remember, the NIT was still a big deal at that point, in fact Marquette, who beat LSU in the NIT semi-final and won the NIT turned down the NCAA's that year,as did Army and Bob Knight who beat LSU in the consolation game.

As for no 3 point shot and time clock in that era, its unbelievable how many teams routinely scored 80-90 points a game from '68 or so until '72. The year after Maravich left LSU, Vanderbilt beat Ole Miss 130-112--no OT.

He's one of my all time favorites. As a kid I was fascinated by the amount of time he spent working on his skills. When he rode with his family in a car, he would dribble a basketball out the window. (not while driving down the highway) When going to a theater to watch a movie, he would sit in an aisle seat and dribble during the whole movie. The long hair, floppy socks, his flair for the dramatic, etc; I don't think there will be another one like him.
I once read that someone actually looked at every one of his college game films and figured out what his scoring average would have been if there had been a three point line back when he played. It was incredible, but I can't remember the exact stats.

Thank goodness our fellow darker-skinned moviegoers didn't adopt this practice.

I found the stat:
"Years later former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots he took. Brown calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot (5.8 m), 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, lifting the player's career average to 57 points per game.

He did state that there was one time he got mad when the manager came by and told him he had to stop dribbling because people were complaining. He did try to sit away from people and dribble quietly.

I read that a while back. I thought back then the NIT was as prestigious as the NCAA tourney. I'm not a b-ball guru so I could easily be wrong.
