How come California doesn't produce more nfl talent with such a massive population and talent pool to pull from?

That is a dumb article really, the south has always been known as Defense first region. Plus, Philllip Rivers and Tavares jackson are from alabama, Eli Manning from La., Cam newton Ga, Tebow Fl, Jason campbell miss, TJ yates NC so plenty of starting QB's from the south in the NFL and East texas is as southern as it gets, so I don't get their point. With all the money cali parents have put into their QB's you would think they would start for every NFL team, but they don't. Brady,Palmer,Smith,Casel, sanchez who else from cali. Like I said dumb article, really. JMO

Wow. That whole article was nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt at giving the PAC-10 some sort of positive affirmation.

No going to read it b/c posted on here SB winning QB's and the states they come from. La had as many as Cali and was only second to Pennsylvania. With that said Bradshaw, Williams and a couple of others were not from there, but Both Mannings are. I do not believe none of that shite. Until the saints Drew Brees won the SB NO QB HAD EVER WON THE SB FROM THE DTATE OF TEXAS!!!

You should have read because the article has nothing to do with historic QBs...every state has some big time famous QB fans can point to.

It's talking about current recruiting in the SEC...and where the Pro high school QBs are coming from the last few years...while the SEC is putting mostly athletes at QB.

Good article.

The point Mandel makes about expensive, year around personal QB coaches/lessons starting from middle school age is interesting.

The Mannings certainly came from a professional year around training environment.

It makes me think of tennis, where elite players are usually from families that could spend a lot of money on private lessons.

Still, I'm surprised that more wealthy southeastern kids aren't also getting these tutors. I wonder if kids like McCarron, Mettenberger, Wilson, Murray, Bray etc had year around professional QB coaches?

That extra QB lesson crap is BS, man. When a 250-300 lb player hits the qb in the face, then you find out what kind of qb you have, not some overpaid qb GURU. Yes he may be able to help him read a D or have a quicker realease, maybe. None of that matters with natural ablitly and good feet and toughness. I think many Cali QB's have been way overrated, Lienhart, palmer, sanchez,Joey harrington,Ryan Leaf, a long list of overhyped cali qbs. Rob Johnson, the one that doug flutie beat out and Jim Rome said Rob Johnson was twice the qb as flutie but johnson could not beat him out.... So, screw the cali qb hype, JMO

You make some good points. I'd also add that Mandel's point about SEC defenses not facing top 25 rated QBs is a circular argument at best. For example, Wilson would be ranked a whole lot higher if he hadn't played against 4 or 5 of the Top 25 defenses. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Stafford didn't have an ultra high rating either and so on.

However, I'm still not sure that the QB lessons are so negligible.

It could be that a lot of QBs from California were overrated simply because they were more developed as far as mechanics at a younger age?

Aaron Rodgers is from California. Warren Moon is another. I'm sure there are others.

As wm72 pointed out, Eli Manning is a bit of an exception. His family is literally a quarterback factory. Also, Newton and especially Tebow are kind of non-traditional. Not exactly pocket passers.

Actually there are a lot of quarterbacks who hail from Pennsylvania. Montana, Namath, Marino, Jim Kelly. Would be interested to know the dynamic there.

Rodgers went to high school in Ogreon, he was born in cali, but that means little if you ask me, dealing with the article. We are not talking about past pro qb's he is talking about present day qb's, his article's act's like their is a much Todd Manrivich's running around in cali with their daddy or something. Playing qb is like hitting a baseball, you can set in the batting cage hitting fastball's all day, but as soon as a real pitcher puts that breaking ball on you, that is when shite really starts. you get my drift, dude...
