Lsu fans, a question about the punt returns in the NC game...

In the 13 games leading up to the NC game, Lsu had only given up a total of 6 yards the entire season. Against Bama, in the NC game, they gave up 67 yds on 3 returns, one of which could maybe have been a td if Maze hadn't pulled up hurt.
First, Lsu's coverage was nothing short of amazing for the year, don't know if we'll ever see anything like that again. Before the NC, they gave up .3 yards per return, and afterwards, still only averaged 1.4 per return.
I haven't studied the film or anything, but was the coverages being used ran differently or were there some busted coverages during those 3 returns, good blocking by Bama or a combo of those things?

I think Saban mentioned that he "changed some things up". Not sure the x's and o's but it definitely confused LSU and worked wonders.

Gonna be honest. The 2 aspects going into the game that had me nervous, was our fg kicking and your punter flipping the field on us.

The punts weren't as good. LSU did have great coverage units, mainly the gunners, but Brad Wing absolutely was dominant this year with his not only long, but high kicks. LSU's coverage teams were always right there as soon as the receiver caught the ball. Wing did not have a good night punting, and the returners had room to run before the coverage team could get down field.

Looks like he just disn't get the normal height on the punt. He was FREAKY consistent all season, it had to happen sooner or later. Kid's a freshman. That was THE key play. Psychologically, that's when I think LSU players had confirmation it was not their day.

The personal foul on the fair catch was another mental mistake in the punting game that I remember. Bama would have been backed up deep if not for that hit.

Game was decided by that point, so it didn't effect the game. But that was an invalid fair catch signal. The receivers hand never reached above shoulder level.

I agree first punt great return but not a td if Maze didn't pull up. There was two guys in front of him one being Wing and he was inbetween the sideline and two LSU players.I forgot he would have made this unbelieveable all world move and made one guy miss and ran over Wing because he is just a punter.Just messing with you.

Now not messing with you the fair catch signal was bs. He did not make correct fair catch signal.Would not have changed anything though, still got our asses handed to us.

It was valid. The motion was clear. There was a debate a couple of years ago about a signal that wasn't even that clear and it was ruled valid.

I read where Saban brought in a consultant after the season to work with Special Teams. Looks like he did a good job.

Whatever I should know better.

I read where Saban is the greatest coach of all times, except he is worst NFL coach of all times.

All I recall about the punt returns in the NC game was that Brad Wing made Maze quit. Maze knew he was about to be unloaded upon by the Australian Assassin and pulled up lame.

You had a fit about people flaming, and you're going in that direction.

His hand was not raised above his head, therefore, it was an illegal fair catch signal.
quote:
The member of the receiving team must raise one arm a full length above his head and wave it from side to side while kick is in flight. (Failure to give proper sign: receivers’ ball five yards behind spot of signal.)

one of which could maybe have been a td if Maze hadn't pulled up hurt.

He pulled up scared, not hurt. Wing was about to blow him up with an Aussie football tackle

Just further proof that every facet of that game on January 9th for LSU was a complete cluster-frick. The team was simply not prepared.
