What's wrong with wanting to create more competition among your players?

It means you get 110% out of them everyday you have them. No slackers allowed to waste up the limited time the coaches have with them.

You cut out the fat and get down to only the guys that want to compete and take their jobs seriously. Sounds like a very professional approach to me.
