Stupid call Walsh has sucked this year. Run it on second up the middle, 3rd center it or kneel or whatever.

Oh god I'm so sorry we let the Gators down.

Yes, he knew. It is common to kick on 3rd down in case there is a bad snap. But you would think he would have tried to pick up a first down by running before assuming he was in automatic field goal range.

Yes, this is the conventional wisdom for kicking on 3rd.

But usually that "wisdom" holds when its a chip-shot field goal.
When its 40 yards or more, most sane coaches would try to get it closer. If that sane coach had an undependable field goal kicker, he might even try to get it a LOT closer.

Walsh nailed 2 FG's longer than that one in OT. The guy had plenty of leg and had it in the middle of the field. It's not on CMR.

Yes. But giving up those extra 2 yards to get the ball in the center of the field may have cost him the game. The FG only missed by about a foot.

Hindsight is 20/20 but you can't say he didn't put him in a position to have a 90% chance to win the game. Murray had already thrown 2 picks. He was doing the safe thing and his AA kicker just didn't perform. It happens.
