Define major poll. Because that has happened 8 times. Not 13. And as has been pointed out, the polls have fricked up a lot over time, so the point still stands. Bama has been a legit NC 6 times.

I looked up another year, 1973, that bama claims due to a "major poll" (this is getting kinda fun).
Notre Dame, Ohio state, Michigan, OU, and PSU all finished undefeated. 5 teams with no loss.
Bama lost a game. To Notre Dame who was 11-0.
This is the year that was such an embarrassment to college football that the voting and polls were changed immediately. So, even though it was hugely embarrassing to everyone, Bama still ignorantly claims they were a champion that year. Sorta funny, but typical I suppose.

There, you answered it youself.
We were voted #1 eight times by a major poll that is recognized today. You can't go back and say "Hey, I was wrong back then since we changed the rules now."
