I think that the RPI needs to be taken out of the formula for determining NCAA tournament teams. It was a system developed in the 80's and it is clearly showing its age now with all of the modern systems of analytics available.
My biggest problem with the system is that it does not tell you how good a team actually is, because it doesn't take margin of victory into account. Why should a 1 point victory at home over an awful team be worth the same as a 10 point win on the road over a good team? Sure, each win is only worth one win, but it does not tell you how well a team played.
Here's how the PRI is calculated. Only 25 percent of the formula comes from how you perform. 50 percent comes from your opponents records. And the final 25 percent comes from your opponents opponents' records. So a very bad team could have a great RPI because of the actions of their opponents, and not because of their skill level. This is another major problem with the RPI the good can be rewarded for playing the bad and vice-versa. So the best team in the country isn't the best because its opponents arn't the best? That seems pretty unfair to me.
In short death to the RPI!
