Shultz: Richt will probably need to go 9-1 to save job

But reality is that it will take a miraculous finishing kick for the Bulldogs to have a successful season and possibly save coach Mark Richt’s job. What does that amount to? Try 9-1 in the next 10 games.
That may seem extreme. But Richt’s contract situation, the backdrop of the past two-plus seasons, the demands of coaching in the SEC, the divided fan base and a cryptic comment at a recent athletic-board meeting indicates if the Bulldogs do anything less than win the SEC East, which may take a 9-1 finish, Georgia may make a change.
quote:
Consider:
• The contract: Richt will have two years left on an eight-year deal after this season. That’s basically death in recruiting unless Georgia extends the contract, probably by at least two to three years. To not extend the contract also would set up the extreme rarity, particularly in the SEC, of a coach potentially entering his third straight “hot seat” season and working on a contract that had not been amended since after the 2007 season (when Richt received a raise).
• The schedule: Every remaining game is winnable. To put it another way, there are no “good” losses left. Florida? Maybe. But how would Richt dropping to 2-9 against the Gators go over with athletic director Greg McGarity, school president Michael Adams and the fan base? Losing to Florida means losing tiebreakers to both the Gators and South Carolina in the East. Beating Florida could salvage division hopes, but only with a strong finish.
• The record: McGarity probably doesn’t have a specific number of wins and losses in mind. But let’s look at this logically. Going 9-1 the rest of the way means a 9-3 finish, while 8-2 means finishing 8-4. Two losses mean the Dogs probably will have lost to Florida again. And/or Georgia Tech (making Paul Johnson 2-2 in the series). Or Mississippi State (for the second straight year). Or Tennessee (to Derek Dooley).
• The backdrop: It’s significant that at a recent UGA Athletic Association meeting, board member Tommy Lawhorne stated, “There are many of us who are really concerned about the status of the football program. Yet we have confidence in Greg McGarity to get us where we want to be.” Note that he referred to McGarity and not Richt.

Just kidding, read it yesterday and agree for the most part. Only way I see him keeping his job is if we luck out and win the East.

I heard Richt was about to get a contract extension.

richt just needs to go 6-6 and most of your fanbase will pipe down

If we play like we did on Saturday (obviously minus the 4 free TDs we gave them) we can easily win out. Of course it's a pretty long shot to say we'll match that intensity every game.

if we want to salvage any recruits he will need this. that is why i like this article, shutlz actually mentions how we need to either shite or get off the pot because no extension yet keeping him will be the worst possible thing we could do

Georgia looked phenomenal in many areas on Saturday. Don't know why everyone is counting them out just yet. What's going to determine Georgia's fate is how they handle it when it gets thick. Do they roll over or do they keep going?

i don't see anyway way this team wins out. i'd like that, but i don't see that at all.
i see dropping 2-3 with MSU, @ UT, UF, and AU and perhaps if he really fricks up a loss to vandy or OM. but i mean he would have to really frick up.

I don't mean they gave up against either Boise or South Carolina. I just mean do they start hanging their heads with an 0-2 start?

Georgia fans don't want to hear it, but I heard from a coach on Monday that he thinks Kirby has a shot and that he might take Sal with him (which Bama fans don't want to hear).
I still think UGA shoots higher (Patterson), but it always depends on what jobs come open and what those jobs mean to certain candidates.
Leach, Rich Rod, Tommy Bowden all want back in coaching, so I'm sure their agents will float their names for any decent job out there. Doesn't mean they'll get it or are even candidates, but we'll hear their names for sure.

This whole thing is a bunch of BS. There is nothing Richt can do to save his job. If he won every game this year then lost the first one next year, the talk would come back
The best thing UGA can do is go ahead and fire him and get it over with. The program can not move forward as long as this thing is lingering. It will begin to hurt recruiting if it already hasnt.
Just fire his arse and move on. It is going to happen anyway. The negative vibe can not be good for the program

i think the guys will be fine and will continue to think we can win out because we can. i just don't see how we can with the youth and this staff

NO KIRBY. if we hire him then i am going to have an aneurism. but if we can get him an unreal staff than i guess i can at least deal with it a little.
i agree with all else you say except we will not even consider bowden, leach, and especially rich rod

i agree 100% with you. he could go 9-3, 8-4 and people would still be waiting for his next frick up. i think it is beyond repair.
