I guess Jim McElwain was thinking "Gus Malzahn is the one getting all the potential head coaching love, maybe I can get some attention if I start running his plays ..."

And I'm not sure why the last half of the video is comparing basic screen plays. Most every offense in college football uses some version of them in the shotgun.

Correct, whoever made that video is a moron. I have been a student since McElwain got here and his offense has changed very little since that time. If the barner who made that video would care to do their homework he would see that those same plays were run in 2009 and even 2008 with JPW before Malzahn ever arrived at Auburn.

The main reason for the video is to show 'Bama fans how stupid they were when they said Auburn ran gimmicky plays. Turns out, we both run the same plays.

McElwain mixes in new stuff every year. But it's still a base pro-style. I wouldn't be surprised to see some stuff Boise State runs, this coming season. McElwain spent time with the Boise State staff in the spring. Considering McElwain's background in the WAC and Pac Ten, it's not that surprising he has tendencies to use plays like this. But to say he's ripping off Gus Malzahn is short-sighted, and just plain ignorant.

I don't think that was the intent at all. Nor do I think you do either.

I think you're failing to see the whole point.

So McElwain was running wildcat before Malzahn was?

What about the play where the receiver motions all the way into the backfield behind the play, I've only seen one school run that play...well two after Bama decided to throw it in their playbook...

Know what else is funny, Bammers been claiming their version of the wildcat wasn't gimmicky because they only ran Ingram out of it.

Now all of a sudden..."oh yea, we've been running that jet sweep for years"

I know what point the guy that made the video is trying to make. However, showing 5-6 plays is far different than charting the entire offensive playbook that McElwain would use. And FWIW, I've never felt that Auburn's offense is "gimmicky". But, like Urban Meyer's arrival, I questioned its effectiveness in the SEC at its start.

I don't think that Auburn run's "gimmicky plays" per-se, but I do believe there offense is gimmicky. While they still run the same basic zone reads and speed sweeps, they attempt to come up with weird formations and the speed of the offensive play calling is simply a gimmick to attempt to gain an extra edge over the opponent. If that is one of your strategies, it's fine. It works, but own up to it and don't mistake your team for a ground and pound style. I don't think there is any denying that Auburn's offense is "gimmicky", but it showed last year that that can be highly effective. I just didn't agree with the OP view that UA had stolen plays from Malzahn when I have been watching the same offense for the past 3/4 years.
