Auburn scholarship numbers

In an amazing contrast to what most SEC schools are facing (too many scholarship players), according to Auburn Athletics director Jay Jacobs, Auburn will have only 47 football players on scholarship for Spring training.
I thought that number was incredible. Here is one of his quotes:

quote:
"This spring, the football team only has 47 scholarship athletes. Gene and I knew coming into this that 2011 was going to be the most challenging year early in his tenure simply because of the drop off in numbers. This fall will be challenging to say the least. Certainly we are still enjoying the national championship, the first one at Auburn in 53 years, but realistically we know this fall will be a major test. But as we have all seen the last couple of years, those guys will play hard and will represent Auburn University well. We are looking forward to 2012 and 2013 really, when we get our numbers back to where we need to be."

Pretty incredible, but maybe this means we will keep putting together very good recruiting classes with all the spots open.
That is if we can overcome this shitty PR storm we've been through.

Had to cut payroll - there is a recession going on.

It was incredible last week too when the numbers first came out.

A pretty legit one, though. Except it has only been caused by people working for Auburn... not NCAA sanctions, etc. But still, a pretty dang good excuse.

At least they have Malzahn to pull em through...

We're really gonna be fricked if the injury bug hits hard. It may end up being a 5-7 type year like so many gumps predicted if we have guys go down for extended periods of time.

How many players have left the program that was recruited by Chizik? Seems like a high number, but I don't know.

quote:Add the 24 that signed and you get only 71, that is very very low (D1-aa level). Auburn thought they would have 76-77 (6 have been dismissed) Part of the reason is that Auburn has only 8 seniors so they wanted a full class next year. So IF no one else leaves, Auburn will be at 63 (71-8) then add 22 to get to 85 (assumes no others leave, injured, etc.)
Auburn will have only 47 football players on scholarship for Spring training.

It's 46 now. (Subtract one for Jessel Curry leaving. He was on the spring roster.)

Malzahn should have left while he still could. He won't be such a hot name by December.

All.
One poster was laying the blame on Tubbs, was just curious how many Chizik has lost that he recruited.

Damn they've only got half a team.

If Auburn can somehow manage to win 8 games this year, his name will be hotter than ever.
