All these folks talking about the "irony" of the Toomer's Oaks crime are misusing the term.
Situational irony - an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected, the difference between what is expected to happen and what actually does.
It would be ironic if the poison caused a growth spurt. It is not ironic that the trees were dying and were also poisoned. It is also not ironic that Auburn fans are upset that the crime happened. Killing the trees and being outraged that somebody beat them to it might be hypocritical, but is not ironic.
Do we really know that the trees were being “killed” by AU, or is this just rhetorical exaggeration?

The irony is that the growth of their program was nurtured by the profits of slaughtering trees.

When I learned about that, I began hating that album.
