What makes you "hate" your rival?

I'm curious to know what makes fans hate their rival on a personal level. I'm not talking about just a general hatred because they are your rival, but more specific reasons. An obnoxious family member? An obnoxious fan of said rival? Something a team or coach did? Or is it just good old fashioned "they suck, we rule" thinking?
For me, my pure hatred of all things Bama comes from growing up in the 70's. Alabama was a huge powerhouse and Auburn was struggling through the tail end of Shug's coaching tenure and the failed experiment that was Doug Barfield. We lost 9 years in a row to Bama, and frankly, that really really sucked. So for 9 years, all I heard was how bad we sucked and how great Bama was....and Bama winning an NC in there didn't help. Having to listen to that in my formative years put a burning hatred of Bama and all things Bama that I still have to this day.

Mostly the fact that they frick their family members and livestock. Hell, they even frick other people's livestock too.
Auburn is just a giant piece of shite, I really hope the entire Auburn fanbase catches a terrible STD

1) I was raised as a Gamecock fan and pretty much told to hate them so I've grown up with it
2) I was about 10 or so when I 1st really started really understanding and getting into SC football. The 1st SC-CU game I watched was 2000, what is known as "The Catch II" in CU history but "the Push-Off" by SC fans. The announcers stated they were calling that all game and were surprised they didn't call it then, it was in frame by frame in the papers too. And this game / play has created by deep-seeded hate for Clempson.

The sense of entitlement bama fans think they have. The non stop braggin about "13", especially kids my age, when they have seen just as many championships for Alabama as I have for auburn. The worshiping of a dead person as much as they do. Don't get me wrong, there are good bama fans out there...but the bad seem to outweigh y'alls good ones.

What's funny is that I know a couple of guys from my hometown that went to bama (sigma nu's...lol) that fit that description.
